20 Cool Facts from the Event Finals at the 2021 World Championships

VAULT FINAL

1.The Olympic Vault Champion, Rebeca Andrade turned into the World Vault Champion

2. Asia D’Amato’s vault silver is the first ever medal for Italy at the World level on this apparatus.

3. Fourth place finisher in the vault final Egypt’s Nancy Taman, was the oldest gymnast competing at an event final. Nancy will turn 27 in three weeks, on November 15.

4. The Netherland’s Elisabeth “Elze” Geurts qualifying score of 14.350 would have won her the silver medal in the actual final but she fell on her second vault and finished last.

5. Mexico’s Natalia Escalera finished 7th in the vault final. Her presence marked a streak for Mexico as they have appeared at every major vault final since 2018. Alexa Moreno qualified and medalled bronze in 2018, finished 6th in 2019 and placed fourth at the Olympics in Tokyo.

BARS FINAL

6. The routine with the most difficulty (6.5) won the gold medal. (Wei Xiaoyuan)

7. The routine with the highest E-score (8.733) won the silver medal. (Rebeca Andrade)

8. The silver (Rebeca Andrade) and bronze medallists (Luo Rui) scored the same (14.633). Andrade was awarded silver over Luo Rui because she had the highest E-score.

9. Angelina Melnikova placed fourth at the bars final just like she did at the 2019 World Championships

10. No one fell at this final and the lowest ranked gymnast (Filipa Martins) scored a high 14.066.

BEAM FINAL

11. In contrast, almost everyone fell in the beam final. Out of nine competitors six fell or in Leanne Wong’s case grabbed the beam.

13. There were nine competitors because Rebeca Andrade and Mai Murakami qualified with same D-score and E-score so the tie was not broken. Murakami won bronze while Andrade fell on her switch leap mount.

14. Luo Rui, who fell on her round off layout (nasty fall), originally scored a 13.400. She submitted an inquiry to get her D-score raised and instead the judges took a tenth away after reevaluating her routine. Her final score was a 13.300

15. With her silver medal at this competition Pauline Schafer now has a complete set of beam world medals. She won gold in 2017, silver in 2021 and bronze in 2015.

FLOOR FINAL

16. Angelina Melnikova and Mai Murakami were the only Olympic Floor finalists competing at this World Championships. At the Olympics they tied for bronze.

18. Both Angelina Melnikova and Mai Murakami submitted inquiries to get their D-score raised. Murakami’s was accepted while Melnikova’s was rejected. When Murakami’s score was raised by a tenth she passed Melnikova and placed first.

19. With her silver floor medal Angelina Melnikova leaves Kitakyushu with a whole set of medals gold (all-around), silver (floor) and bronze (vault). In contrast, her teammate Vladislava Urazova leaves Kitakyushu with two fourth places: all-around and Floor. M

20. Mai Murakami expressed her desire to retire after this competition so her gold medal winning floor routine was the last ever of her career.
