10 Cool Facts from the 2024 Asian Championships

1. China sent a B-team but still won, team, all-around (Hu Jiafei), bars (Yang Fanyuwei) and beam (Qin Xinji) gold.

2. Chen Xinji was a member of the Chinese team both in 2023 and 2024. Last year she only won team gold but this time she also took silver on beam and Floor.

3. The vault gold went to Dipa Karmakar while the Floor gold went to Emma Malabuyo. This is an upgrade for Malabuyo since last year she was the silver medallist on Floor.

4. The all-around final was close; the top four contenders scored 50 plus. Hu Jiafei (gold) scored a 50.699 ahead of teammate Qin Xinji (silver) 50.566.

5. In the fight for bronze Phillipine’s Emma Malabuyo (50.398) and Kazakhstan’s Aida Bauyrzhanova (50.365). The fight was for a lot more than a place in the podium, they were fighting for an Olympic spot that went to Malabuyo by a 0.033 difference.

6. If it was any consolation for Aida Bauyrzhanova she won bronze on Floor

7. The competition took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the home city of Oksana Chusovitina. She was supposed to be in the race for the AA spot that could get her to the Olympics, sadly, after an injury during podium training she withdrew. This was her last chance to qualify to Paris so, no ninth Olympics for her.

8. Despite the absence of Oksana Chusovitina, Uzbekistan managed to win team bronze.

9. The entire Philippine team is American, they just represent the country internationally. The team was Charlie Manzano, Kaitlin DeGuzman, Levi Jung Ruivivar (bronze bars) and Emma Malabuyo (gold on Floor and the Olympic spot)

10. The junior all-around champion, who also won gold on vault and bars was Japan’s Rinon Muneta.
