The Brazilian Pan-American Medallists (1999 – 2019)

A recap of the Brazilian Pan-American Medalists between 1999 and 2019.

Daiane Dos Santos, then 16, was the revelation of the Brazilian Team in 1999 winning bronze in the Floor Exercise and silver on vault. Daiane attended two more Pan-American Games contributing to the team bronze medal in 2003 and the team silver in 2007.

Daniele Hypolito’s career is the second longest in the woman’s gymnastics scene only behind Oksana Chusovitina’s. She has participated in five Pan-American Games (1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 & 2015) collecting 10 medals: 4 with the Brazilian Team and 6 individually. She owns medals in every piece of apparatus except for vault. Back in 2003 she medalled in the all-around, bars and beam, in 2007 on beam and in 2011 on beam and Floor.

With the 2007 Pan-American Games taking place at home in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Team had a particularly strong showing. Daiane Dos Santos and Daniele Hypolito were the veterans of the team but also shining in their own light were Lais Souza who won two bronze medals: vault and bars as well as new senior at the time, Jade Barbosa who won the bronze in the Floor Exercise and gold on vault. Jade Barbosa was born in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2015, the Brazilian team took bronze but the only individual medalist was Flavia Saraiva who placed third in the all-around. Four years later the history repeated itself, Brazil, as a team, again placed third with Flavia as their only individual medallist. In Lima 2019, she took bronze in the all-around and Floor. Just like Jade, Flavia was also born in Rio de Janeiro.
