20 Cool Facts From The 2018 World Championships #DohaGym2018

1. Less than 24 hours before the U.S. Women were set to compete in the qualification round Simone Biles was in the hospital due to pain from a kidney stone.

2. During the qualification round, Angelina Simakova scored a zero on vault after crash-landing her Rudi.

3. The top 24 teams from qualifications gained the right to send full teams to next year’s World Championships. The last team to grab a spot was the Czech Republic

4. Grace McCallum celebrated her 16th birthday the day the team final was contested: October 30th. She contributed on vault and Floor towards her team’s golden finish. That was truly a #SweetSixteen

5. Other gym birthdays were Georgia Mae Fenton’s 18th birthday that happened during the first day of event finals (November 2nd). Georgia would have loved to make the bars final and celebrate her birthday there but she fell from the bars during the qualification round. As for Elisabeth Seitz, she turned 25 the day after Worlds ended (November 4th). Her gift was a bronze on bars.

6. During the team final, Simone Biles grabbed the beam to stay on and then counted an out of bounds with both feet in the Floor Exercise. She made exactly the same mistakes at the 2015 World Championships except that then they happened during the all-around final.

7. Despite two falls: vault (sat her Biles) and beam (fell on her Barani), Simone Biles still won the World All-around title. 

8. Simone Biles’ overall difficulty during the all-around was a 25.4. The second most difficult set came from Angelina Melnikova who counted a 22.6

9. Angelina Melnikova placed fifth by a 0.001 difference behind fourth-place finisher Nina Derwael

10. Three neighboring countries took the gold (United States), silver (Canada) and bronze (Mexico) during the vault final.

11. Alexa Moreno became Mexico’s first ever World Medallist with her bronze on vault.

12. In the bars final, Nina Derwael became Belgium’s first ever World Champion with her gold medal.

13. Out of 8 competitors in the beam final three fell: Zhang Jin (twice), Sanne Wevers and Kara Eaker

14. Liu Tinting became the first Chinese World Beam Champion in 7 years. Sui Lu won the title in 2011.

15. Canada won its third and fourth world medal in Doha, both silvers: Shallon Olsen, Vault & Ana Padurariu, Beam

16. Simone Biles placed third on beam just like she did in Rio 2016.

17. First international competition for Aliya Mustafina since the Rio Olympic Games, she placed fifth on bars.

18. Only one new senior medalled: Canada’s Ana Padurariu (silver, beam)

19. Individual medallists that were older than 20: Simone Biles (21), Mai Murakami (22), Alexa Moreno (24) & Elisabeth Seitz (24).
